Frank Lampard has plenty of work to do at Chelsea, as Manchester United opened their season by obliterating the Blues 4-0 on Sunday.

Marcus Rashford found the net twice at Old Trafford, with Anthony Martial and debutant Daniel James rounding out the scoring on what proved to be a chastening day for the new Chelsea bench boss.

Lampard's side actually started the match brightly, with Tammy Abraham seeing a thunderous strike crash off the woodwork. Despite finding themselves under pressure, it was the hosts who opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Kurt Zouma, who had a match to forget on his Chelsea return, felled Rashford inside the area with a clumsy tackle.

The 21-year-old promptly stepped up to the spot and smacked a perfect penalty into the top corner to give the Red Devils the advantage.

Coming out of the interval down 1-0, Chelsea once again upped the tempo, but, as was the case in the first half, their spell of dominance ended with Kepa Arrizabalaga picking the ball out of his own net.

Martial doubled the advantage in the 65th minute, and then Rashford, taking down a spectacular ball over the top from Paul Pogba, killed the contest off with a smooth finish some 120 seconds later.

Pogba played provider again late in the game, teeing up 21-year-old debutant James to cap the scoring, thus condemning Lampard to a heavy defeat in his first match as a Premier League manager.

James, who let out a primal roar after finding the net, was one of three new United players who starred on the day. Big-money defenders Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka were virtually impervious at the back, and when they couldn't slow down the Chelsea attack, David De Gea did just that, looking back to his best after a string of errors last season.
