Canelo Alvarez has expressed interest in scheduling a September fight against Gennady Golovkin, according to Mike Coppinger of The Athletic.

Alvarez's camp is still attempting to finalize his next fight, likely tabbed for May 2 with Billy Joe Saunders as the front-runner, Coppinger adds. Even further, GGG is set to defend his title against Kamil Szeremeta, though the exact date and venue still need to be settled.

Alvarez is expected to campaign at 168 pounds, meaning Golovkin would have to move up from 160.

A split-decision draw decided the first meeting between the two on Sept. 16, 2017. A rematch was promptly scheduled for March 2018 but had to be canceled after Alvarez failed two random urine tests, testing positive for the banned substance clenbuterol.

After Canelo served a six-month suspension, the sequel bout was eventually rescheduled for Sept. 15, 2018 - almost exactly one year after the original fight. Alvarez wound up winning against GGG by majority decision.
