De La Hoya announces Alvarez-Golovkin 2 set for September

After initially claiming the fight likely wouldn't be happening, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya announced Wednesday that a rematch between his client Canelo Alvarez and unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin has been agreed for Sept. 15.

The two sides' deadline to agree was Wednesday at noon Pacific Time, and De La Hoya had told ESPN's Dan Rafael earlier in the day "there is no fight", before following up to say there's still a chance and eventually coming to an agreement.

De La Hoya didn't specify the location in his tweet, but reports all along have suggested the bout will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, where the two boxers met in their first blockbuster fight last September, controversially ruled a draw.

Golovkin (38-0-1) and Alvarez (49-1-2) were supposed to meet in a rematch in May, but the fight was called off after Alvarez twice tested positive for a banned substance, which he blamed on contaminated meat. Golovkin instead fought Vanes Martirosyan in May, easily defeating him via second-round knockout, while Alvarez has yet to return to action.
