Report: 49ers 'strongly considering' drafting QB with No. 2 pick

Much of the pre-draft talk has centered on defensive ends Myles Garrett and Solomon Thomas going back-to-back to lead off the 2017 NFL Draft, but word is growing that the San Francisco 49ers could take a quarterback with the No. 2 pick.

The 49ers are "strongly considering" making a quarterback their first-round selection, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

San Francisco is in the midst of an extensive rebuild overseen by first-year general manager John Lynch and rookie head coach Kyle Shanahan. Lynch has let it be known his team is in the market to draft a quarterback, but the popular belief is that there are no top-flight passers in this year's class.

The 49ers signed free agents Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley this offseason, but neither are thought to be the team's quarterback of the future.

North Carolina junior Mitch Trubisky is considered the best quarterback in this year's draft and reports surfaced last week that if the Cleveland Browns don't take Trubisky with the top overall pick, the 49ers could select him at No. 2.
