Nebraska names Tulane transfer Tanner Lee starting QB

Derik Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

The Tommy Armstrong-era at Nebraska is over, and head coach Mike Riley announced Wednesday that Tanner Lee will be the man tasked with taking over at quarterback for the Cornhuskers legend.

The Tulane transfer, who sat out last season as per NCAA regulations, won the job over redshirt freshman Patrick O'Brien. The two pivots had split reps throughout spring practice, but Lee's impressive performance in last weekend's spring scrimmage was enough to earn the job. The former Green Wave starter completed 13-of-19 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns in the game.

He certainly had big shoes to fill in Nebraska's first season without Armstrong, as the former star pivot ranks first in program history for both career passing yards and career passing touchdowns.

Nebraska opens the 2017 campaign against Arkansas State before traveling to Oregon on Sept. 9.
