Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald will begin the 2024 campaign on the injured list with a Grade 2 oblique strain, manager Torey Lovullo announced Monday.

"Weeks, not days," Lovullo said of how long he expected the right-hander to be out, according to Jesse Friedman of PHNX Sports.

Sewald was a big part of Arizona's bullpen last season after being acquired in a trade from the Seattle Mariners.

The 33-year-old posted a 3.57 ERA and 10.2 K/9 with 13 saves in 20 games down the stretch. Sewald also pitched eight clean innings with 11 strikeouts in the playoffs before struggling against the Texas Rangers in the World Series.

Kevin Ginkel will likely serve as closer during Sewald's absence.
