Haniger's 9th-inning double breaks up Marlins' combined no-hitter

Joe Nicholson / USA TODAY Sports

Mitch Haniger ruined the Miami Marlins' hopes of a combined no-hitter Tuesday when he roped a double off reliever Kyle Barraclough to record the Seattle Mariners' first hit of the game in the ninth inning.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Haniger sent a 2-1 offering from Barraclough into right field that evaded a rushing Giancarlo Stanton and ended the Marlins' no-no bid, drawing out a relieved ovation from the home-town crowd.

Haniger would be the sole Mariner to record a hit in the entire game, however, as Barraclough managed to get Robinson Cano to strike out swinging before Nelson Cruz flied out to right field in the next two at-bats to preserve Miami's 5-0 win.

Marlins starter Wei-Yin Chen pitched seven innings of no-hit baseball before being pulled to begin the eighth. He was replaced on the mound by reliever Brad Ziegler, who needed just 11 pitches to retire Danny Valencia, Leonys Martin, and Jarrod Dyson, all on infield groundouts.
