Posey 'very grateful' after minimal stint on concussion DL

After a precautionary trip to the seven-day disabled list for players with concussion symptoms, Buster Posey is ready to get back on the field.

Though Posey won't take to his usual role behind the plate Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals - he will instead slot in at designated hitter under American League rules - the All-Star catcher is simply relieved he was able to return so quickly despite taking a 94-mph pitch to the helmet earlier this month.

"I'm very grateful, to feel well as quickly as I did," Posey told The Mercury News' Andrew Baggarly. "Obviously, we've seen something like this last longer in the past for certain guys. So I'm very grateful.”

Posey was hit by Arizona Diamondbacks starter Taijuan Walker in the first inning on April 10, and the Giants exercised caution by placing him on the seven-day disabled list after Posey displayed some lingering symptoms.

Though he was lucky to avoid serious injury, Posey admitted trying to curb the number of possible concussions in baseball is a daunting task for the league.

"I mean, when you take 93, 94 (mph) to the helmet, there's not much you can do," Posey said. "It is what it is."
