Report: Yankees, Niese agree to minors deal

Jeff Curry / USA TODAY Sports

Jon Niese could be back in New York City next season.

The Yankees have reportedly agreed to a minor-league deal with the left-hander, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

Niese, who will receive an invite to the Yankees' big-league camp, will be considered by the club as a possible starter as well as a reliever, Joel Sherman of the New York Post adds.

Niese had a disastrous 2016 campaign that saw him flip between both the New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates. After opening the season in Pittsburgh and posting a 4.91 ERA in 23 games (18 starts), Niese was shipped back to the Mets - where he had spent the first eight seasons of his career - but struggled to find his rhythm, posting an 11.45 ERA in a total of 11 innings before being bought out by the Mets in October.

The 30-year-old left-hander underwent knee surgery in August and recently held a workout for teams in February.
