Report: Marlins, Padres to attend Tebow workout

The Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres will reportedly be among 20 teams in attendance for the highly publicized showcase of Tim Tebow, the former NFL quarterback attempting to pursue a career in professional baseball.

Tebow announced earlier this month he would be holding an open workout for interested MLB teams on Aug. 30 in Los Angeles, where the 29-year-old is expected to run a 60-yard dash, catch fly balls, make throws to the bases, and take live batting practice in front of nearly two dozen major-league scouts.

Sources tell Miami Herald that the Marlins have a scout based near the workout, and are simply attending as part of their "due diligence." Tebow's ties to the state of Florida are rich in history, having led the Gators to a pair of national championships.

The Padres will also attend the showcase, according to Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune, joining a list that includes the Blue Jays, Reds, Angels, Tigers, Red Sox, and Phillies.

Earlier this week, former major-league pitcher and training partner David Aardsma said he believes Tebow could reach Double-A by next season if he signs with a club, while Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins told reporters the college football standout has an "amazing swing."

While it's unclear which other teams will send representatives to see Tebow ply his trade on the diamond, the Los Angeles Dodgers reportedly put him through a private tryout prior to the start of the season, and are believed to have shown interest in him afterward, too, according to ESPN.
