'Happy Gilmore 2' gets green light from Netflix

Adam Sandler is officially back as Happy Gilmore.

Netflix announced Wednesday that it has greenlit a sequel to the 1996 golf comedy "Happy Gilmore," with Sandler reprising his role as the titular character, according to Variety's Katcy Stephan.

The announcement comes nearly two months after Christopher McDonald, who played villain Shooter McGavin in the original film, teased that a sequel was in the works.

"I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, 'McDonald, you're gonna love this.' I said, 'What?' He says, 'How 'bout that,' (and) he shows me the first draft of 'Happy Gilmore 2,'" McDonald said during an appearance on Audacy's 92.3 The Fan in March. "Maybe you should cut that out because I don't wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, 'Well, that would be awesome.' So, it's in the works. Fans demand it, dammit."

"Happy Gilmore" stars Sandler as an aspiring hockey player who discovers a newfound talent for golf. In an effort to save his grandmother's house from foreclosure, he enters a golf tournament and faces off against McGavin.
